‘The Wiz’ at ACG Parnell College
Students at ACG Parnell College are working hard after school and at weekends on this year’s musical ‘The Wiz’, a modern adaptation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
The show is set in New York with music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, and was one of the most popular musicals in America. It won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score. Director Glen Pickering is very pleased with the enthusiasm and talent of the students and musical director Jason te Mete ensures the songs are produced loud and clear and with delightful harmonies.
The members of ‘The Wiz’ band are rehearsing with gusto! They form a mini-orchestra comprising violins, cellos, saxophones, flutes, trumpets and lots of percussion, performed by ACG Parnell College Students past and present and staff members Miss Rogers (expert trumpeter) and Jason te Mete on the keyboard.
They rehearse each Wednesday afternoon and Miss Rogers ensures their energy levels are high with a member of the band organised to provide home baking for afternoon tea at each rehearsal.
Miss Rogers reports: “As a band we like to rehearse karaoke style with the music CD before going it alone. So far we think we sound pretty good and look forward to joining with the singers soon. The music is all jazz/funk/Motown and great to groove to!
“We are planning on various dress codes for the performances: see if you can guess the ‘quirk of the night’ when you see us at the final performances!”
‘The Wiz’ performs three nights at 7pm on September 23-24-25 in the Parnell College Theatre (actually the gym, but unrecognisable with sound and lighting installed professionally!) 2 Titoki St, Parnell. Phone 308 1666 to enjoy a night of great entertainment!
