Killing rocks residents
RESIDENTS in the Mt Roskill street where a 60year-old man was killed at the weekend are shocked at the death of their friendly neighbour.
A couple living next to the Richardson Rd house say the victim, who they saw on Saturday evening mowing his lawns, seemed to be of “fairly solid” character and was hard working.
“He was quite a good neighbour, quite helpful,” says one of the neighbours, who did not want to be named.
A younger man living at the property was often drinking, he says.
“Lots of times he asked us to come over and have a drink with him.”
They say there hadn’t been any trouble at the house before, and the residents even told neighbours in advance when throwing a party.
“They were quite courteous.”
Police discovered the body at 7am on Sunday after be- ing called by a person at the dead man’s property.
The police cordon, which covered the crime scene and several other neighbouring properties, was still in place on Monday morning.
Detective inspector Scott Beard says police are looking into a party at a nearby address on Saturday night, and movements of people in and out of the victim’s house.
He says it’s not yet known whether the party is connected with the incident.
A 30-year-old man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Monday charged with assault in relation to the incident. He was remanded in custody and is due to reappear on September 22.
Mr Beard confirmed the arrested man lived at the address but would not comment on the relationship between him and the victim.
“It is being treated as a family violence-related homicide.”
The neighbours found out about the incident when the woman went to get something out of her car on Sunday morning and saw police officers at the property.
“It was a complete surprise. I was going out to the car and all of a sudden there was a cop and heaps of cars. I said to the officer: ‘Has someone been killed?’ He said: ‘It’s not my place to say’. It’s a lot of guessing. It’s quite sad.”
An autopsy was being carried out this week to determine the cause of death.
