City secures bronze playoff
Auckland has lost a bid to host two quarter-finals at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, but will host the bronze final at Eden Park.
Christchurch and Wellington were announced on Thursday as hosts for the four quarter-final matches.
Eden Park is already confirmed as the venue for the semifinals and final.
Regional spokesman Michael Barnett says hosting the bronze, or third and fourth playoff, means Auckland secures the business end of the competition.
“We will have two blockbuster weekends of rugby where the eyes of the world will be on Auckland. We need to give visitors something to remember.”
Rugby World Cup Minister Clayton Cosgrove welcomed the decision to host the quarter-final matches outside of Auckland.
“Hosting the quarter-finals in Wellington and Christchurch will provide a huge boost to those regions and help ensure that the benefits to be gained from the Rugby World Cup will be shared around the country.”
The location for pool matches is yet to be announced.
Submissions to host pool games and team bases are due by the end of October.
