Richmond aims for cup

Richmond rugby league coach John Teina can see the benefits of his team missing out on the Fox Memorial competition.

Last year’s Fox semi-finalists have a good chance of taking out the second-tier Sharman Cup, after losing several experienced players to other clubs at the start of the season.

“I know a lot of the local supporters are disappointed about not playing in the Fox this year,” Teina says.

“But it’s been a good learning experience for the young guys and they’ve responded really well.”

Teina is confident his side can step up against Pakuranga in their semi-final on

at

Grey Lynn Saturday Park.

“It’s a sand-based ground and has stood up well in wet weather,” he says. “It’s a bit of a lottery if it’s a mud bath.”

If they come away with the win, Richmond will face either Howick or Manurewa in the Sharman Cup final.

On Saturday, Manurewa defeated Ponsonby 44-16 to progress to the semis, while Pakuranga overcame Bay Roskill 32-27.

A 20-10 win by Marist over Glenora will see them taking on Otahuhu in a Fox Memorial semifinal at Bert Henham Park on Saturday. In the other semifinal, Mt Albert host East Coast Bays at Fowlds Park. Matches start at 2.30pm.
