Bluestone set to stay

Heritage kerbstones are here to stay in Owairaka.

Former Eden Albert Community Board chairwoman Gillian Dance raised concerns about stones on Owairaka Ave that have been removed as part of kerb and channel construction.

Ms Dance says the blocks made of bluestone scoria have been there for close to a century and most likely came from Mt Albert’s quarries.

“The stones have been there for nearly 100 years and shouldn’t be removed.”

Auckland Road Maintenance Alliance West manager Lawrence Butcher says the stones were removed during the kerb and channel reconstruction and will be reset when work is finished.

Contractors are aware the kerbstones are rare and make every effort to ensure they are treated with care, he says.
