Pain ting a mur al a co s tly busine s s
A group of Mt Albert parents want to give their children something other than graffi t i to look at every day.
They are fundraising to paint a mural on the back wall of the Shell petrol station on the corner of New North Rd and Kitenui St.
The 25-metre wide brick wall is regularly vandalised despite owners painting out the tags each time.
It can be seen by children in classrooms at Marist Primary School and is an eyesore for local businesses and residents.
The group needs to raise around $15,000 to make the mural happen.
“This will bring people together and help to eradicate graffi ti because people are sick of seeing it up all the time,” says parent Geoff Brown.
“It would be nice to have something for kids to look at rather than seeing tags.”
Mr Brown and his wife Tracey Pavlovich-Brown have been working with resident Colleen Deane and local parents for the past year to get the project off the ground.
They have support from Shell, the school and local businesses but need to fi n d between $15,000 and $20,000 for paint and materials.
Ms Pavlovich-Brown has offered to paint the mural, which will be themed around Mt Albert history and Kiwiana.
She says children and parents meet at the wall before and after school each day and it would be nice to see a mural instead of graffi ti there.
“The kids often comment on the tagging on the wall and it would be great to get the community behind this.”
Shell spokeswoman Sheila Kliendienst says the company is behind the mural project and will contribute $1000 to- wards the cost. “This is a positive step to ward off graffi t i and a mural would be much more benefi cial to the community.”
