Local authorities are to have more control of privately- run public transport services.

The Public Transport Management Bill, passed under urgency in Parliament last week, has been welcomed by Auckland Regional Council chairman Michael Lee.

He says the changes give Auckland the ability to design a fully-integrated public transport system.

“In other words, buses will work in conjunction with rail services, rather than competing with them.”

The law will give regional councils the ability to impose standards and controls on commercial public transport services.
