Rally of feet under bridge
Aucklanders can use their feet to show their support for walking and cycling lanes across the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Get Across campaigners are hoping thousands will turn out to a mass rally at Westhaven on Sunday.
Organiser Barbara Insull says they want to show Auckland City Council that residents are behind the project.
“We’re expecting a big turnout of Aucklanders on foot and bike to show they really want the walk and cycleway,” she says.
Ms Insull says nearly 10,000 people have signed up to the online campaign at GetAcross.org.nz, and many are expected at the rally.
At a meeting earlier this month the council’s transport committee rejected the project as laudable, but too expensive.
But it’s been backed in principle by the Auckland Regional Council and North Shore City Council.
Options put forward by a multi-agency report range in cost from $24 million to more than $40m.
Walk Auckland spokesman Andy Smith says some councillors have shown a lack of understanding around the key issues, particularly relating to cost and safety.
Cyclists and walkers will meet for the rally at Westhaven Drive, under the city end of the bridge, on Sunday at 2pm.
