Bathtub racers can win trip to Canada

Bathtubs will soon be taking over Takapuna Beach.

The inaugural Englefield Bathtub Derby will take place on November 8 in support of Coastguard Northern Region.

But now is the time for people to enter.

Englefield is encouraging participants to motor, sail, pedal or paddle a modified bathtub for a chance to win the first prize – a $6500 trip for two to the world championships and Nanaimo Marine Festival in Canada in July.

Entrants receive a plughole-free bathtub from Englefield.

Englefield designers have been working on their tub since January.

Designer Peter Murphy says the basic bath shape does not make a good boat.

Derby participants should concentrate on the back of the bath, he says.

“It needs lots of shear so water comes off really easily. If you just concentrate on that you should have a really fast bath,” Mr Murphy says.

Race entries close October 10. Full details and an entry form can be found at www.bath tubderby.co.nz.
