Local students have a chance of coming away with the glory at the College Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards next week.

Olympic swimmer Orinoco Faamausili-BansePrince, who is up for best male swimmer, is among nominees from Mt Albert Grammar.

Fellow Olympian Anna Green from Epsom Girls Grammar could pick up the prize for top female footballer.

Auckland Grammar allrounder Jimmy Neesham is a possibility for best male cricketer.

Other students from Auckland Girls Grammar, Avondale College, Diocesan School for Girls, One Tree Hill College, Lynfield College and Dilworth School are also up for recognition in their sports.

Each sporting category has three nominees, with the winners up for the male and female supreme award.

Winners of each category and the supreme awards are announced at an awards dinner next Thursday.

Last year’s winner of the supreme sportswoman award, Annalie Longo from Epsom Girls, could repeat her success after representing New Zealand at the under-17 women’s world cup.

College manager Sport Lara

sport Collins says larger schools often have a higher number of nominations, although the emphasis put on sport by the school is also important.

“Some schools are strong in arts and drama.”

Experts from the various sporting codes are involved in the selection process, along with the schools and college sport staff.

But she says in some sports it can be difficult to pick three finalists because there are so many outstanding candidates.

A number of previous supreme award winners have gone on to national and international sporting stardom including Jonah Lomu, Sarah Ulmer and Valerie Adams.
