Auckland is pitching to hold a spectacular event to mark the start of the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

The region has entered a bid for the opening match and opening ceremony of the tournament.

Bid spokesman Michael Barnett says if successful, Auckland will be the focus of a global broadcast event.

“The eyes of the world will be on the opening match and opening ceremony, so the opportunity to showcase Auckland and New Zealand through these events is stunning.”

Auckland is already confirmed as host of the final, semi-finals and bronze playoff.

Pool matches and hosting of teams during the tournament is yet to be decided.

With a third of the country’s population, Mr Barnett says the region is aiming for a similar share of the 40 pool matches on offer.

Auckland’s proposal was developed by the region’s councils and rugby unions, tourism and transport authorities.
