Nesting birds at risk of prowling pets

Cat owners are being urged to protect native birds from pets this summer.

As the nesting and fledging season starts, birds are particularly vulnerable to cats, says Auckland regional councillor Christine Rose.

“Birds bring beauty and life to the garden, they are natural pest controllers of aphids and caterpillars and can lead to a healthier backyard,” she says.

“However, they are at risk from cats which can wipe out entire nests.”

Birds can be protected by putting a bell on the cat’s collar, or by restricting time outside.

Pets are best let out at night, when they’re more likely to catch mice and rats.
