Celebration time for Enoka brothers

Central Leader - - Sport -

It was literally party time at the Enoka household over the weekend.

Brothers Thomas and Ben Enoka, who both play softball for the Auckland United club, were selected in the Black Sox squad that will travel to Canada in July for the world champs.

Thomas says Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase rang with the good news during a farewell party for holidaying relatives, who were about to return to England.

“It just turned into a bigger party.”

The 18-year-old pitcher describes the selection as “a bit of a shock”.

But he’s pleased big brother Ben, 19, also made the grade.

“It’s always good playing with family members. There’s someone to back you up.”

And he’ll learn plenty from two of the squad’s most experienced pitchers, Marty Grant and Heinie Shannon.

He says previous trips to Canada with the Junior Black Sox mean he knows what to expect in terms of conditions.

Mt Albert Ramblers player-coach Donny Hale and Nathan Nukunuku also made the squad, but club teammates Michael and Thomas Cameron missed the cut.
