A man who tried to rob five petrol stations in one night is being sought by police.

The incidents happened within 45 minutes in the early hours of February 20 at central suburb stations, from Onehunga to New Lynn.

The offender threatened station staff with violence and in two cases attendants told police a concealed object resembling a pistol was used.

He was caught on security cameras and is described as a Maori or Pacific Islander with black hair and a solid build.

He was aged between late teens and mid-20s and may have a black tattoo on the inside of his right forearm.

The offender was wearing a white truckerstyle hat with a white New York Yankees logo, a navy blue t-shirt with a stripe logo across the chest and a large green and blue logo on the back, baggy black threequarter pants and white trainers with black detail.

Anyone with information can contact detective constable Scott Jones at the Avondale police station on 820-5786.

All information will be dealt with in confidence.
