An inorganic waste collection planned for a public holiday is causing concern for Waterview and Avondale residents.
Those wanting to get rid of unwanted junk will have to put it out over Easter weekend, April 11 and 12, when many people are away on holiday.
It will be collected the following Tuesday because Easter Monday is a public holiday.
Waterview resident Ken Lomax says he’s unhappy the Auckland City Council collection, which happens once every two years, has been scheduled for over the break.
“A lot of people are going to be away and there’ll be a lot of visitors who won’t want to see rubbish all over the street,” he says.
Council rules state people aren’t allowed to put out their rubbish before their designated weekend, or they could be fined $400, though a council spokeswoman says they won’t be fined “unnecessarily”.
While the inorganic collection won’t start until Tuesday afternoon, Mr Lomax says having the collection over the long weekend will create plenty of problems.
“If people are going away they’re not going to be back on the Monday to put it out and if people put it out early, scavengers are going to go through it.”
Mr Lomax says he suggested to the council that it moves it to another time – such as the end of June after the rest of the collections have finished – but the idea was rejected.
“We are paying them and expect them to make some reasonable decisions on our behalf. This isn’t reasonable.”
Councillor Cathy Casey looked into the matter after being contacted by Mr Lomax and says she can see his point.
She says it would be difficult to change this year’s collection date but the council should look at leaving the holiday off the schedule during the next collection if a number of people are disadvantaged.
A council spokeswoman says it is not viable to move the collection date beyond the end of June because of poor weather.
Inorganic collections started across the city in mid-February.
She says people who are going away could arrange for someone else to put out their rubbish for them or can put it out on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning before the collection starts.

Leaflets will be sent out 10 days before the collection.
