Teens gear up for speedway
Teen racer Aiden Eustace is getting ready to burn rubber against the Aussies.
The Onehunga High School student is one member of a six-person New Zealand junior speedway team that will face their transtasman rivals at Waikaraka Park tomorrow night.
Aiden, 14, is predicting a tough night of racing for his team.
“It will be pretty close. They’re pretty good.”
He was selected for the team after a number of top five performances this season, including several wins.
“It’s an adrenalin rush and you get to know dif- ferent people,” he says.
Aiden, who has been racing for three years, was also recognised earlier this week at a school assembly after his selection in the New Zealand side.
“It was pretty cool. Everybody wanted to know what it was about.”
Team captain Chloe Corban says having home advantage at Waikaraka is a real bonus for the team.
“We’re all very familiar with the track.”
And she says being a female driver is no disadvantage.
“Everyone treats you as an equal out there.”
