Charities gunning for record water pistol fights
Auckland will shoot it out with New Plymouth for the title of the World’s Largest Ever Water Pistol Fight this weekend.
Both attempts to beat the Guinness World Record are to be held within 24 hours of each other, but until now neither city has known of each other’s plans.
The events have been organised by two New Zealand charities looking to make a splash for a good cause.
Unicef announced its plan to stage the mass water pistol fight at Western Springs Park this Sunday just days before Variety announced the same event to be held in New Plymouth.
But despite the timing of the events, both charities say the projects are in no way connected.
“The processing of applications with Guinness takes quite a while,” says Unicef spokeswoman and event organiser Jennifer Boyes.
Unicef hopes the clash will be positive for the event and add an element of friendly competition.
The Auckland event is focused on increasing awareness of this year’s Unicef Tap Project.
The Tap Project is a repeat of last year’s campaign, in which restaurants asked diners to donate money towards the water they received with their meals.
The project aims to raise money for countries lacking clean drinking water.
The New Plymouth record attempt will celebrate the conclusion of the annual Variety Bash.
Variety communications manager Kelli Sullivan says they are expecting a huge turnout from New Plymouth on the day, and Unicef has the same hopes for Auckland. Both cities need at least 2671 participants involved if they are to claim the title of world record holder.
Unicef’s event at Western Springs Park will be held on Sunday from 11am to 1pm. Entry is free, but participants must register from 10am. Those taking part can take their own wa- ter pistols as long as they are standard, shop-bought models. They will also be available in exchange for a $2 donation to Unicef.
