Cup win for Mixed Africans

The Mixed Africans beat Laos 1-0 in the men’s fi­nal of the seven-a-side Eth­nic Soc­cer Cup tour­na­ment at Mt Roskill War Memo­rial Park on Sun­day.

With no score at full time the match went to a penalty shootout.

Mixed Africans striker Hamse Hus­sein was first to put the ball in the net, sig­nalling victory for the team.

“This is the sec­ond time we have won,” said Hus­sein af­ter the game. “It feels great.”

Or­gan­iser Fran­cie Law­son was im­pressed by the high stan­dard of play in this year’s tour­na­ment, along with the turnout of teams and hun­dreds of spec­ta­tors.

“It’s great to see the lo­cal com­mu­nity come out and show sup­port.”

The tour­na­ment, part of the Auck­land In­ter­na­tional Cul­tural Fes­ti­val, is in its third year.
