Veggies not chocolate for Easter
Instead of the usual chocolate treats, Great Barrier residents will celebrate Easter with enormous vegetables.
Pumpkins are being grown for the Great Barrier Island Giant Pumpkin Festival, being held on Easter Saturday.
Organised by the Pensioner Housing Trust, the festival will raise money for a pensioner housing village on the island.
Trust chairwoman Doreen Scott hopes the festival will become an annual fundraiser and people will travel from Auckland to take part.
As well as prizes for the biggest and smallest pumpkins, there will be a number of pumpkin-related activities.
The Amazing Pumpkin Cookbook, produced by the island’s cooks, will also be on sale on the day.
The festival is being held at the Claris Sports Club from 10 am.
Entry forms are available by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or phoning Doreen on (09) 429-0323.
Aucklanders can travel to Great Barrier Island on Sealink Ferry or by flying with Great Barrier Airlines or Fly My Sky.
