Tight matches were the order of the day during the opening round of the Alan McEvoy premier club rugby competition on Saturday.

Defending champs Ponsonby were pushed to the limit by Waitemata in a repeat of last year’s grand final, eventually winning 26-20.

Grammar Carlton came away with a hardfought 18-13 win against College Rifles, while Eden Roskill sneaked home 16-13 against Suburbs.

And a late surge from Te Papapa-Mt Wellington wasn’t enough.

They went down 23-12 to University after trailing 13-0 at half-time.

Next week Ponsonby will host Teachers Eastern at Western Springs while Grammar Carlton will take on Waitakere City at Waitakere Stadium.

Eden-Roskill clash with Waitemata at Waitemata Park and Te Papapa-Mt Wellington face East Tamaki at East Tamaki Domain.

All matches start at 2.45pm.
