Playcentre counts on help

The Eden-Epsom Playcentre needs help overhauling its outdoor playground to meet safety regulations.

Playcentre volunteer and parent Carmen Lawson says the non-profit organisation needs to find $90,000 for the three-stage project.

“We’re hopeful this first stage will go ahead next month but we need $18,666 right now to fund it.”

The project will involve replacing a high fort structure with a multi-use gazebo, adding a roofed deck for year-round use and reshaping the sandpit so it’s safe and functional.

A nature trail is planned at the entrance and concrete areas need to be covered with safety matting. Existing matting must also be replaced.

“The work is designed to last long term and be low maintenance so the project will benefit local families for decades more,” says Ms Lawson.

Members have con- tributed $30,000 towards design fees and council permits and $30,000 has also been received from grants but the upgrade is expected to cost more than $150,000.

“Usually gaming trusts assist community causes like playcentres however in this economic climate they are struggling to find the funds.”
