Young mother puts Best foot forward

BEST Pacific Institute of Education’s aim through education is to help people get the best out of their lives.

Haereata Keepa, although studying and doing quite well in computers and accounting at school, could only find work as a part-time waitress. She was also trying to juggle her life as a young mother, so it was not a very promising start to her working life - until she enrolled at BEST.

Haereata’s temperament and ability to ‘cut through the clutter’ gives her a natural talent for administration. So, aged 17, she en- rolled in the Certificate in Business Administration at BEST and began studying for a qualification which she knew would help build a career with potential.

BEST’s flexible learning environment enabled her to fit studying around home commitments, which was im- portant to her as a mother of a baby. She says the BEST programme also gave her confidence and relevant, valuable skills for securing an administration job.

“I’d worked on computers and done accounting at school, but BEST got me back into it,” she says. More than that, she was able to use her Best Pacific Institute of Education qualification to put her on track for a bright business career.

After passing her Certificate in Business Administration, Haereata secured a junior role with a major national organisation and has subsequently been promoted to a Contract Administrator’s position.

Learning new skills, increasing your knowledge and gaining a qualification at BEST will give you the opportunity for better jobs, and access to further tertiary education. By having little or no entry criteria for the majority of their programmes, they make it easy for you to choose tertiary education and give you a pathway - just as it did for Haereata.

BEST opened its doors in 1988 so that Pacific peoples had the opportunity to take their place in this new world with quality training and education that recognised their needs. This philosophy remains as strong today - BEST is the biggest Pacific focused provider of tertiary education in the country.
