Shaky start for Lions
The Mt Albert Lions’ hold on the Fox Memorial club rugby league title is looking shaky after a 22-16 loss to the Richmond Bulldogs on Saturday.
It’s the club’s second defeat in as many weeks, after notching up four wins on the trot earlier in the season.
Richmond co-coach John Teina says it’s one of the biggest wins for the club since he and Ricky Henry took over last year, when Mt Albert thumped them by more than 60 points.
Defeating the Lions also means Richmond are the new holders of the Roope Rooster, club league’s equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield, with the trophy being defended at home matches. Other matches in section A saw the Marist Saints overcome the Northcote Tigers 2212, while the Bay Roskill Vikings suffered a hard fought 20-12 loss to the Howick Hornets.
And in section B the Ponsonby Ponies overwhelmed the Hibiscus Coast Raiders 66-4.
On Saturday the last match of the Fox qualifying round sees Richmond put the Roope Rooster on the line when they face Marist at Grey Lynn Park. Mt Albert take on Mangere East at Fowlds Park, Bay Roskill clash with Northcote at Birkenhead War Memorial and Ponsonby play Te Atatu at Jack Colvin Park.
All matches start at 2.30pm.
