Mr Bishop has taken over the shop which was started by his late friend Tony Gib­son, who en­joyed Bat­man comics and named the shop af­ter the su­per­hero’s home Gotham City.

Ev­ery year Mr Bishop runs ses­sions in schools to talk to stu­dents about pro­duc­ing comics.

“In­ter­me­di­ate and secondary schools are us­ing comics for merg­ing English, art and me­dia stud­ies.”

He says on the first Satur­day in May ev­ery year, comic book shops around the world give away comics to any­one who goes into their stores.

Gotham Comics will be giv­ing do­na­tions from the day to One­hunga Pri­mary School to help fund its li­brary.

Mr Bishop says Free Comic Book Day is of­ten the busiest day of the year. • Gotham Comics is at 264 One­hunga Mall, One­hunga, and Free Comic Book Day will run from 10am to 4pm.

Vis­i­tors will re­ceive two free comics for en­ter­ing the store, two free comics for wear­ing a su­per­hero cos­tume and two comics for a gold coin do­na­tion to One­hunga Pri­mary School.

About 3000 comic books will be given away on the day.
