Sign on for spe­cial class

Those want­ing to try learn­ing sign lan­guage can do so as part of New Zealand Sign Lan­guage Week, which runs un­til May 10.

As part of the week, a num­ber of free taster classes are be­ing held to give the pub­lic an in­sight into sign lan­guage.

Most classes run for 45 min­utes and par­tic­i­pants are taught the fin­ger spell­ing al­pha­bet and ba­sic phrases. • Avon­dale li­brary will hold a class to­day, 10am to 10.45am and on Fri­day from 11am to 11.45am. The li­brary will also host deaf sto­ry­telling for preschool­ers to­mor­row from 10am to 10.45am • On May 9 the Blockhouse Bay li­brary will hold a taster class from 1.30pm to 2.30pm • The 2009 New Zealand Sign Lan­guage in Action Awards are also be­ing held • The Deaf Short Film Fes­ti­val in Welling­ton will be held at the end of the week, show­cas­ing films made, di­rected and pro­duced by deaf peo­ple.
