Sign on for special class
Those wanting to try learning sign language can do so as part of New Zealand Sign Language Week, which runs until May 10.
As part of the week, a number of free taster classes are being held to give the public an insight into sign language.
Most classes run for 45 minutes and participants are taught the finger spelling alphabet and basic phrases. • Avondale library will hold a class today, 10am to 10.45am and on Friday from 11am to 11.45am. The library will also host deaf storytelling for preschoolers tomorrow from 10am to 10.45am • On May 9 the Blockhouse Bay library will hold a taster class from 1.30pm to 2.30pm • The 2009 New Zealand Sign Language in Action Awards are also being held • The Deaf Short Film Festival in Wellington will be held at the end of the week, showcasing films made, directed and produced by deaf people.
