Theatre curtain goes up
A little bit of luxury has landed in Balmoral with the reopening of the Capitol Theatre movie cinema.
The theatre, which previously showcased Bollywood movies, was closed late last year for restoration.
It opened last week and will now screen a selection of independent movies.
Theatre owner Richard Dalton says while the opening was originally marked down for early April, it had to be postponed because of delays in sourcing furnishings and compliance signoffs.
“We wanted to open in conjunction with the Topp Twins movie which premiered last month but missed out so it’s kind of tricky opening up in the middle of a season screening.”
Now that the fresh gold paint on the intricate plastering has had time to dry, the venue is screening up to five sessions of the film daily.
Mr Dalton says the entire movie experience has always appealed to him, even before he left his life as an accountant in England to manage cinemas in Auckland more than 12 years ago.
“I’ve always had a taste for it, it was just a matter of finding my feet. Now I’ve hardly got time to sit down and enjoy the films.”
The Greenlane resident is certainly experienced now, having started the popular Lido Cinema in Epsom almost eight years ago.
The Lido has since been voted Auckland’s best cinema for five consecutive years.
“What we play here will be similar to what we play at the Lido, but not as soft,” says Mr Dalton.
The Capitol Theatre originally opened in 1923 and has had a rich and varied past.
It currently shares its roof with an indoor rock-climbing venture. The wall scaled by climbers was the theatre’s original screen wall for an audience of 900.
Now the mezzanine is all that remains of the theatre, providing an intimate and comfortable film-haven for up to 130 people.
“It’s just beautiful. One of the major attractions of the Balmoral area for me is the Asian influence. It’s got a community and a whole buzz which I love.”
