Centre a real hope

A new community centre in the heart of Mt Eden may be a step closer to becoming a reality.

Auckland city councillor Glenda Fryer says a recent facilities partnership meeting recommended the council contribute $426,000 to the project.

It will go to the arts, culture and recreation committee meeting this month for approval.

Members of the Mt Eden Methodist Church Charitable Trust, Maungawhau Mt Eden Village Centre Society and the Eden Albert Community Board want to create the community centre by redeveloping the church’s existing buildings in the village in partnership with the council.

Ms Fryer says the church originally planned to pull some of its buildings down and put up a shop front but reconsidered and came up with the proposal.

“The community is behind it and the council is behind it. Everyone’s a winner.”
