Nominations open for Auckland’s top gardener
The search is on for Auckland’s top green-thumbed gardener.
NZ Gardener magazine is seeking nominations for 15 regional champions to compete for the national title.
Regional winners receive $1000 worth of gardening products with the supreme winner receiving $5000 worth of products from Bunnings Warehouse and a trip for two to the 2010 Ellerslie International Flower Show.
Last year a nun from Wellington, Sister Loyola Galvin, won the title for setting up a rent-a-veggie-plot scheme for apartment dwellers.
NZ Gardener editor Lynda Hallinan says the search aims to reward the country’s unsung horticultural heroes.
“We’re not looking for gardeners with the most manicured lawn, welltrimmed box hedging or those who can grow the largest pumpkins,” she says.
Instead the magazine is seeking passionate grassroots gardeners who share their love of gardening with their local community.
To nominate a passionate gardener, send a letter to: NZ Gardener 2009 Gardener of the Year, PO Box 6341, Wellesley St or email mailbox@nzgar dener.co.nz.
Include why they would make a worthy winner, your name and phone number and contact details for the person you have nominated.
Entries close on June 30 and regional winners will be announced in the September issue.
