Get your wig on for a charity night out

Worn by royalty, barristers, Egyptians and celebrities, the wig is now making an important contribution to charity.

Wig-wearing supporters are being asked to channel their inner Cleopatra or Cher while dancing the night away to raise funds for Starship hospital and the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

Organiser Chinda Uch says the Big Wig Out is back to help raise funds for the organisations who helped care for her 11-year-old sister Kanika, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2007.

“As you can imagine this was a massive shock to me and my family, not to mention my friends.”

Chinda then decided to hold the Wig Night Out as a fundraising event and received more than $2700 in donations.

“Kanika is now back to her healthy old self thanks to Starship hospital and the blood foundation but since the event was so successful we’ve decided to do it again.”

This year’s event is being held in the city at neighbouring venues Fu Bar and Zen Bar and will feature entertainment from 21 musicians including Charlie B and Bevan Keys.

Guests are asked to sport wigs of every shape and length to show solidarity for chemotherapy patients who lose their locks during treatment.

“It’s pretty much a pal thing to say ‘don’t be ashamed of wearing a wig’ and to show support by wearing one,” says Chinda.

“Workplaces can also get involved by asking staff to wear a wig, bandana or cap this Friday for a gold coin donation as part of Wig Day Out.”

Foundation executive director Pru Etcheverry is thrilled Wig Night Out is happening again.

“I think it’s a fabulous way to raise funds. We’re very appreciative of people who work hard to put on an event to raise money.”

Doors open at 9.30pm this Friday at Fu Bar, 4 Wolfe St and Zen Bar, 17 Albert St. Tickets cost $20.
