Chinese businesses throughout Auckland are being warned by police following phone calls trying to extort money.

Police say the caller is thought to be a man who speaks Mandarin. He claims to be part of an Asian gang and is asking for different quanti- ties of money ranging up to $20,000. The first phone call was 9.30am on Tuesday last week to a Chinese business.

The police have visited the targeted businesses to reassure them.

If contacted by the caller, police advise people not to present them- selves as vulnerable and not to be intimidated.

Police say it is vital they are made aware of every call.

Anyone who has been phoned by the man or knows anything about his activities should contact their local police station.
