Firefighters raised a record $140,000 for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation in their races up the Sky Tower last weekend.

Eighty brigades from around the country climbed the 51 flights of stairs dressed in 25kg of firefighting gear.

The Auckland Airport Fire Rescue brigade put in a good showing on the day, coming runner-up in both the race up the tower and the fundraising, with almost $12,000 as their final tally.

Top fundraisers for the fourth year in a row were Paihia volunteers and first team to the top were South Auckland.
