Cornwall bat their way to a solid win
Cornwall got off to the perfect start after the opening round of club cricket’s twenty20 competition on Saturday.
Cornwall shared the blue section lead after defeating Grafton United by 23 runs in the club’s first match of the season at Cornwall Park.
Batting first, the home side posted 141-8 with Michael Guptill-Bunce, 47, and Ace’s spinner Ronnie Hira, 34, providing the bulk of the runs.
Grafton failed to recover from a slow start, managing just 118-4 from their 20 overs.
There was more success for Cornwall in the afternoon round of matches, claiming a nar- row two-run win over University Ellerslie in a rain-affected match.
Hira, 41no, and Guptill-Bunce, 30, again provided the runs for Cornwall as they reached 153-6.
University Ellerslie looked in the hunt before rain interrupted play, leaving them two runs shy at 118-2.
Grafton had more success in the second session, racking up a onewicket win over Parnell at Cornwall Park.
While Parnell posted a competitive 147-1, Craig Borich’s 57 provided the backbone to Grafton’s run chase as they reached 148-9 with one ball remaining.
In the white section Eden Roskill faced some tough opposition. Despite 40 from the ever reliable Vivek Trichy, they could only manage 1038 batting first against Howick Pakuranga at Keith Hay Park.
They failed to take a wicket as Howick Pakuranga cruised to a 10 wicket win.
Takapuna dominated Eden Roskill’s attack in the afternoon session, scoring 179-5. Trichy again led the way for his team with an unbeaten 77, before the side fell 13 runs short of its rainadjusted target of 162, finishing up on 149-4.
Rounds three and four are at the same grounds on Saturday. Matches start at 11am.
