West End down champs
Last year’s beaten Caro Bowl finalists West End overcame club tennis champions Parnell by the slimmest of margins last week.
After both clubs were all tied up on three matches and seven sets apiece, West End were declared the winners on a games countback, winning 71 to Parnell’s 67.
Caro Bowl veterans Alistair Hunt and Adam Thompson won their respective singles matches, while Hunt and Mark Nielsen took their doubles clash.
But talented young professional Oliver Statham lost his singles and doubles match, which saw him partnered with former South African rep Wesley Whitehouse.
Meanwhile Campbell Park is finding their two Argentine players Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettirosso to their liking, with both players winning during the club’s 4-2 triumph over Royal Oak.
Campbell Park and Blockhouse Bay lead the competition after two rounds, while West End sit in third-equal spot alongside Parnell.
In the women’s competition Royal Oak defeated Mission Bay 5-1.
Leela Beattie won 6-2, 6-3 over Imogen Golder in the number one singles and club pro Angela Swinkels racked up the same scoreline in her victory over Dana Gray.
Unfortunately for Pompallier, they couldn’t keep up with Remuera, going down 4-2.
On Friday in the men’s competition Campbell Park visit Remuera, Royal Oak host Kohimarama, West End welcome Pompallier and Parnell travel to Blockhouse Bay.
The women’s competition sees a clash between Pompallier and Royal Oak at Pompallier’s St Mary’s Bay courts. Matches start from 6pm. Standings after two rounds: Men: Blockhouse Bay 14, Campbell Park 14, Parnell 11, West End 11, Remuera 9, Royal Oak 4, Kohimarama 1, Pompallier 0.
