West End down champs

Last year’s beaten Caro Bowl fi­nal­ists West End over­came club ten­nis cham­pi­ons Par­nell by the slimmest of mar­gins last week.

Af­ter both clubs were all tied up on three matches and seven sets apiece, West End were de­clared the win­ners on a games count­back, winning 71 to Par­nell’s 67.

Caro Bowl vet­er­ans Alis­tair Hunt and Adam Thomp­son won their re­spec­tive sin­gles matches, while Hunt and Mark Nielsen took their dou­bles clash.

But tal­ented young pro­fes­sional Oliver Statham lost his sin­gles and dou­bles match, which saw him part­nered with for­mer South African rep Wes­ley Whitehouse.

Mean­while Camp­bell Park is find­ing their two Ar­gen­tine play­ers Gus­tavo Gomez and Mar­i­ano Pet­tirosso to their lik­ing, with both play­ers winning dur­ing the club’s 4-2 tri­umph over Royal Oak.

Camp­bell Park and Blockhouse Bay lead the com­pe­ti­tion af­ter two rounds, while West End sit in third-equal spot along­side Par­nell.

In the women’s com­pe­ti­tion Royal Oak de­feated Mis­sion Bay 5-1.

Leela Beat­tie won 6-2, 6-3 over Imo­gen Golder in the num­ber one sin­gles and club pro An­gela Swinkels racked up the same score­line in her victory over Dana Gray.

Un­for­tu­nately for Pom­pal­lier, they couldn’t keep up with Re­muera, go­ing down 4-2.

On Fri­day in the men’s com­pe­ti­tion Camp­bell Park visit Re­muera, Royal Oak host Ko­hi­marama, West End wel­come Pom­pal­lier and Par­nell travel to Blockhouse Bay.

The women’s com­pe­ti­tion sees a clash be­tween Pom­pal­lier and Royal Oak at Pom­pal­lier’s St Mary’s Bay courts. Matches start from 6pm. Stand­ings af­ter two rounds: Men: Blockhouse Bay 14, Camp­bell Park 14, Par­nell 11, West End 11, Re­muera 9, Royal Oak 4, Ko­hi­marama 1, Pom­pal­lier 0.

Women: Ko­hi­marama 15, Royal Oak 14, Pom­pal­lier 8, Re­muera 6, Glen­dowie 3, Mis­sion Bay 1, Par­nell 1.
