Celebrating Auckland architecture
Homes, offices, public and heritage buildings and even a treehouse were celebrated at this year’s Auckland architecture awards.
The awards were announced last night and included winners from throughout Auckland across 10 categories chosen from more than 100 entries.
Among the winners were the seven storey, five tower Ironbank development on Karangahape Rd, designed by RTA Studios.
The building, which has retail and office spaces, won four awards including commercial and sustainable architecture categories, as well as the urban design award and the Resene colour award.
The structure was described by the judges as “created to an international standard, from the com- pletely 007 carpark upwards”.
The NZI Centre in the central city by Jasmax scooped three awards in the commercial, sustainable and interior architecture categories.
Beaumont Quarter by Studio Pacific Architecture won in the urban design category and Via Centro by Herbst Architects and the Wintergarden at the Northern Club by Fearon Hay Architects was honoured in the commercial architecture category.
Other central Auckland winners include Hotel DeBrett in the heritage category, the Auckland War Memorial Museum and the AUT Lecture Theatre and Conference Centre in the public architecture category.
Winners in the residential categories were the Cook House in Freemans Bay, the Stamford Residences on Albert St and Hall Houses in Ponsonby.
Elsewhere in Auckland, the Yellow Pages Treehouse restaurant and Wiroa Station Beach Lodge both won in the small project category.
Judging panel convener Mario Madayag says it was encouraging to see excellent architecture being applied to commercial buildings and an emphasis on sustainable elements.
All local winners are now eligible for the New Zealand architecture awards decided by a national jury early next year.
Finalists for the prestigious New Zealand architecture medal will be announced at the New Zealand Institute of Architects annual gala dinner in May.
