Shopping bags

Central Leader - - News -

It is a pleasure to see when one is going to the local supermarket that individual shoppers are now taking their own shopping bags more frequently.

This is not only good for the environment that we are using less plastic bags but there are other advantages such as less litter, particularly around supermarkets, and it is much better carrying breakable items such as glass bottles in stronger carrier bags.

Supermarkets should not charge extra for plastic bags but rather shoppers should be advised of the numerous positive reasons to bring their own bags.

A campaign like this will always be more successful if is voluntary. Penalty charges, or taxes on bags is definitely not the way to go. WILLIAM CAIRNS
