League’s story retold
The story of a century of rugby league in Auckland is to be officially launched at the League Legends Lunch in Ellerslie on October 21.
Auckland 100 Years of Rugby League has been written by Bernie Wood and John Coffey and chronicles the trials and successes of the game in the city for a century.
It brings together more than 300 photos, many of them drawn from the Fairfax Media library.
At more than 400 pages the great characters, matches and competitions of the game’s his- tory are all recorded. From the transition of market gardens into what became Carlaw Park to the Fox Memorial successes of Brian “Bluey” McClennan, now coach of the Leeds Rhinos and the guest speaker at the lunch, the book records in great detail the game’s amazing part in Auckland’s history.
It is for sale through auckland league.co.nz for $70 plus postage and packaging, or by phoning 525-5592. It will also be available at Whitcoulls and Paper Plus stores.
Tickets for the League Legends Lunch, with the proceeds going to hospice, are available at $100 plus GST from 268-2912.
