Newcomers are on top
They’re relatively new to the Caro Bowl club tennis competition, but there’s no stopping Campbell Park, who sit at the top of the men’s points table after three rounds.
Former Argentine professionals Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettirosso have been leading the way for the Greenlane-based club which defeated Remuera 4-2 on Friday night.
Gomez was tested by former Davis Cup player James Shortall, eventually winning in a third set tiebreak, before joining forces with Pettirosso to beat Shortall and Martin Colenbrander in the top doubles match.
The test of the season for Campbell Park comes this Friday when they host West End, who easily defeated Pompallier 6-0 in their latest clash. Adam Thompson, Mark Nielsen, Alistair Hunt and Teo Susnjak all came away with wins for West End.
Blockhouse Bay put up a brave fight against reigning champs Parnell, but couldn’t quite pull off an upset victory going down eight sets to seven after the matches were tied up at 3-3.
Royal Oak were the other big winners, thumping Kohimaramara 5-1.
Meanwhile, in the women’s section competition leaders Royal Oak maintained their winning record by beating Pompallier 6-0.
On Friday night in the men’s section Royal Oak visit Remuera, Campbell Park host West End, Kohimaramara welcome Blockhouse Bay and Pompallier travel to Parnell.
In the women’s section Pompallier take on Mission Bay at home and Royal Oak clash with Glendowie at their Royal Oak courts.
