New­com­ers are on top

They’re rel­a­tively new to the Caro Bowl club ten­nis com­pe­ti­tion, but there’s no stop­ping Camp­bell Park, who sit at the top of the men’s points ta­ble af­ter three rounds.

For­mer Ar­gen­tine pro­fes­sion­als Gus­tavo Gomez and Mar­i­ano Pet­tirosso have been lead­ing the way for the Green­lane-based club which de­feated Re­muera 4-2 on Fri­day night.

Gomez was tested by for­mer Davis Cup player James Shor­tall, even­tu­ally winning in a third set tiebreak, be­fore join­ing forces with Pet­tirosso to beat Shor­tall and Martin Colen­bran­der in the top dou­bles match.

The test of the sea­son for Camp­bell Park comes this Fri­day when they host West End, who eas­ily de­feated Pom­pal­lier 6-0 in their lat­est clash. Adam Thomp­son, Mark Nielsen, Alis­tair Hunt and Teo Sus­n­jak all came away with wins for West End.

Blockhouse Bay put up a brave fight against reign­ing champs Par­nell, but couldn’t quite pull off an up­set victory go­ing down eight sets to seven af­ter the matches were tied up at 3-3.

Royal Oak were the other big win­ners, thump­ing Ko­hi­mara­mara 5-1.

Mean­while, in the women’s sec­tion com­pe­ti­tion leaders Royal Oak main­tained their winning record by beat­ing Pom­pal­lier 6-0.

On Fri­day night in the men’s sec­tion Royal Oak visit Re­muera, Camp­bell Park host West End, Ko­hi­mara­mara wel­come Blockhouse Bay and Pom­pal­lier travel to Par­nell.

In the women’s sec­tion Pom­pal­lier take on Mis­sion Bay at home and Royal Oak clash with Glen­dowie at their Royal Oak courts.
