Ram­blers off to a flyer

Club soft­ball vet­er­ans Lawrence Naera and Aaron Thomp­son hit Mt Al­bert Ram­blers to a first up 8-0 win over Eden-Roskill at May Road in the Auck­land fast­pitch cham­pi­onship on Satur­day.

Both hit home runs, with Naera’s shot a grand slam, scor­ing four runs. For­mer Black Sox player Bernard Hale, the first Ram­blers’ bat­ter of the game, hit a home run to set the scene.

Mean­while, Auck­land United, with one win al­ready over Eden, used its youth­ful squad well to beat North Shore’s Roost­ers 9-4.

In the women’s sec­tion, reign­ing champs Ram­blers showed no re­spect for ri­vals the Waitakere Bears with a solid 8-3 win. The win was largely due to more fine bat­ting from for­mer in­ter­na­tional Tuhi Cooper who scored three runs for her team.

Metro, strug­gling af- ter los­ing in­ter­na­tional Me­gan Far­rell, last sea­son’s na­tional player and pitcher of the year, lost to How­ick 8-5 and Marist 12-0.

Ram­blers’ men play the Waitakere Bears at May Rd from 2pm on Satur­day, fol­lowed by Eden Roskill and Waitakere.

There is a full day of action at Phyl­lis St with all eight clubs in­volved in six games. The first match starts at 11am.
