Ramblers off to a flyer
Club softball veterans Lawrence Naera and Aaron Thompson hit Mt Albert Ramblers to a first up 8-0 win over Eden-Roskill at May Road in the Auckland fastpitch championship on Saturday.
Both hit home runs, with Naera’s shot a grand slam, scoring four runs. Former Black Sox player Bernard Hale, the first Ramblers’ batter of the game, hit a home run to set the scene.
Meanwhile, Auckland United, with one win already over Eden, used its youthful squad well to beat North Shore’s Roosters 9-4.
In the women’s section, reigning champs Ramblers showed no respect for rivals the Waitakere Bears with a solid 8-3 win. The win was largely due to more fine batting from former international Tuhi Cooper who scored three runs for her team.
Metro, struggling af- ter losing international Megan Farrell, last season’s national player and pitcher of the year, lost to Howick 8-5 and Marist 12-0.
Ramblers’ men play the Waitakere Bears at May Rd from 2pm on Saturday, followed by Eden Roskill and Waitakere.
There is a full day of action at Phyllis St with all eight clubs involved in six games. The first match starts at 11am.
