Cornwall continued their march toward the Jeff Crowe Cup one-day final with a narrow 21run win over University Ellerslie on Sunday.

In a low-scoring match at Colin Maiden Park, the visitors could only manage 152-9, with Dave Brown’s vital knock of 61 giving his bowlers something to defend.

Despite Cornwall’s low score, the University Ellerslie batsmen found it just as hard at the crease with only James Boyle 40 getting going.

Todd Hewitt’s 3-10 led a Cornwall attack that made short work of the home team, who made just 131 during their turn at bat.

Cornwall now face Parnell in the major semifinal on Sunday.

Unfortunately for Cornwall they couldn’t get a sneak peek at Parnell’s form in the twoday Hedley Howarth Trophy, with the first day of their match at Shore Rd abandoned on Saturday.

Eden Roskill had a mixed day in their Blue Section top of the table clash with Howick Pakuranga at Keith Hay Park.

The home team struggled first up, posting just 150.

However Tom Henderson’s superb spell of 3-1 off five overs left Howick reeling at 12-4 by stumps.

Meanwhile, it was a case of honours being shared once play got under way between Grafton United and University Ellerslie at Victoria Park.

After winning the toss Grafton put the visitors into bat first.

While the home side took wickets at regular intervals, University’s competitive attitude saw them battle through to 175-9 at stumps.

On Saturday Cornwall face Parnell in their Jeff Crowe Cup major semifinal at Shore Rd, while all local sides continue on day two of their respective Hedley Howarth Trophy matches.
