Celebrate Mt Eden’s cultural and natural heritage at Love Your Mountain day on Sunday.

The day’s free programme, organised by Friends of Maungawhau, includes ecology and history tours, a talk and demonstrations of traditional Maori weaponry, a flax-weaving workshop, maunga face painting, live music, and a children’s wish tree.

Traffic will be barred from the summit from 10am to 4pm to allow visitors to explore and picnic on the volcanic cone.

‘‘This year we’re celebrating the first full year without heavy buses on the maunga,’’ says Ian Fish, who has been involved with the event since its inception seven years ago.

‘‘One of our aims is to create more community awareness of issues related to managing and preserving the volcanic cones,’’ he says.

This year retailers in Mt Eden village are entering into the spirit and will be dressing the main street with green balloons.

Many will be giving out discount vouchers.
