Event supports charities

Six charities will benefit from the 2013 Ports of Auckland Round the Bays fun run on March 10.

The event is co-owned by the Auckland Joggers Club and Fairfax Media, owner of Suburban Newspapers and the Central Leader.

Proceeds from registrations totalling $1.5 million have been donated to various children’s charities.

The next beneficiaries will be YMCA Auckland, Auckland Cystic Fibrosis, Choice Foundation Stand Tall Programme, Variety, Make-aWish NZ and Fairfax First Books.

Fairfax Media chief executive Allen Williams hopes for a record number of registered runners to make the event a success. Around 70,000 people complete the water- front course between downtown Auckland and St Heliers each year but not all pay the $15 registration fee that helps boost the coffers of chosen charities.

Only 42,000 runners registered last year.

‘‘We’ve already opened registrations and barbecue site bookings for the 2013 run and for the first time have incorporated online fundraising for the selected charities,’’ Mr Williams says.

‘‘Getting behind a cause and running for a reason will raise even more funds to go to these charities and help even more kids.’’
