Children are being encouraged to keep their cogs turning during the holidays with the launch of the Auckland libraries summer challenge.

The Dare to Explore summer reading adventure programme was launched at Mt Roskill library this week with the help of students from Dominion Road and St Therese schools.

Speaking at the launch was libraries manager Allison Dobbie and Puketapapa Local Board member Ella Kumar.

The programme is in its second year and runs at all libraries across the Auckland region.

‘‘It’s already proved to be really popular, last year we had 6000 children take part and this year we want lots more,’’ Ms Dobbie says.

The aim of the programme is to keep children reading over the summer break.

‘‘It keeps all the cogs in your brain moving through the holidays, so your brain won’t hurt so much when you get back to school.’’

Mrs Kumar says the programme helps equip young people with ‘‘all the skills, knowledge and brain-power’’ to become future leaders.

‘‘Dare to Explore is such a great programme that encourages you to read and helps make it fun,’’ she says.

Kids who want to take part in the challenge can join at any library in the Auckland region.

Children who sign up receive a passport and a guidebook to reading activities they can do ‘‘at home, on holiday, at the library, on the internet and with friends’’.

The challenges in this year’s programme are about New Zealand and what makes it a beautiful country.
