Quick thinking neighbours who foiled a burglar are being praised by police. The first good samaritan was alerted to a break in at his neighbour’s Onehunga house at about 10.30pm, on December 16, when he heard glass smashing at the property. Mt Wellington police Senior Sergeant Hirone Waretini says the man confronted the alleged burglar who jumped a fence to escape down Alfred St. The man gave chase and was joined by two brothers. The burglar jumped into a bush on Grotto St to hide, but was surrounded by the three men who held him until police arrived. ‘‘They’ve done an outstanding job of looking after their neighbour and helping us apprehend the offender,’’ Mr Waretini says. A 19-year-old Sandringham man will appear in the Auckland District Court on January 7 to face burglary charges.
