Nurses hand out pills

Central Leader - - NEWS -

Central Aucklanders with diabetes will soon find it easier to get their medication by seeing a specialist nurse for their prescription instead of the doctor.

In the near future three Auckland Dis- trict Health Board nurses will join three diabetes nurses already prescribing at the DHB.

The decision by the Ministry of Health comes after a 2011-12 ‘‘demonstration’’ by 12 specialist nurses prac- tising in diabetes in the lower North Island showed that they could manage the patients safely and effectively.

Nurses and patients were so positive about the change the ministry decided to roll out the system nationwide.
