Auckland Art Gallery’s long-time director Chris Saines is leaving his role to head Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art.
The Australian-born director has led the gallery since 1996, seeing it through its $121 million building development last year.
In 2009, Mr Saines negotiated and secured the largest ever art gift to an Australasian public gallery.
It was valued at $115 million.
He leaves in March to take up his new role in Brisbane in April.
Regional Facilities Auckland envisages the recruitment process for a new Auckland Art Gallery director will be wide in its scope.
