Ath­letes off to fes­ti­val

Some of Auck­land’s top young ath­letes are set to get their first taste of Olympic-style ac­tion rep­re­sent­ing New Zealand at the 2013 Aus­tralian Youth Olympic Fes­ti­val in Syd­ney.

A team of 150 elite ju­nior ath­letes, in­clud­ing 40 Auck­land com­peti­tors, will com­pete against teams from 30 na­tions in Olympic sport­ing events.

The New Zealand team will be fol­low­ing in the foot­steps of Olympians Lisa Car­ring­ton, Blair Tuke and Peter Burl­ing who be­gan their ca­reers at the fes­ti­val.

New Zealand Olympic Com­mit­tee sec­re­tary gen­eral Kereyn Smith says the ex­pe­ri­ence is an im­por­tant step in an ath­lete’s Olympic path­way.

‘‘The Olympic Games are in­cred­i­bly com­plex and quite dif­fer­ent from a world cham­pi­onships. The ath­letes will be bet­ter pre­pared for their fu­tures.’’
