Athletes off to festival
Some of Auckland’s top young athletes are set to get their first taste of Olympic-style action representing New Zealand at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.
A team of 150 elite junior athletes, including 40 Auckland competitors, will compete against teams from 30 nations in Olympic sporting events.
The New Zealand team will be following in the footsteps of Olympians Lisa Carrington, Blair Tuke and Peter Burling who began their careers at the festival.
New Zealand Olympic Committee secretary general Kereyn Smith says the experience is an important step in an athlete’s Olympic pathway.
‘‘The Olympic Games are incredibly complex and quite different from a world championships. The athletes will be better prepared for their futures.’’
