Grateful for readers’ help
An elderly woman conned out of thousands by a man she met at church is thanking those who have helped her.
Olive Stoddard, 95, took in the man after he started attending her Mt Eden church in February.
He claimed to be down on his luck after his home and the hotel where he worked were destroyed by the Christchurch earthquake.
The man allegedly used Mrs Stoddard’s eftpos card without her knowing in the fortnight he stayed with her and in the days after he disappeared.
Mrs Stoddard’s bank believes she lost around $5000 through the various transactions and cheques that also went missing.
She says she is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community since the Central Leader featured an article about her ordeal last month.
‘‘I’ve even had people send me money from Australia,’’ Mrs Stoddard says.
‘‘Thank you to all of the generous people who have helped.’’
Police are yet to track down the man involved in the case.
