Find skills on ice
Anyone curious about curling can put their skills to the test on the ice this weekend.
Auckland Curling is hosting Have-a-go sessions at 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Sunday at the Paradice Ice Rink in Avondale for people of all ages and abilities.
Curling is often referred to as ‘‘bowls on ice’’ and was reintroduced to the Winter Olympics in 1998.
Club president Al Langille says it’s easy to pick up the basics.
‘‘We can have you playing a game within an hour of getting on the ice. Curling is a great sport for abso- lutely everyone because it’s primarily based on skill rather than strength.’’
The club has players ranging in age from teenagers to seniors.
Budding curlers don’t need any specialist gear, just warm clothing that you can stretch out in and clean, flat-soled shoes. All other equipment is supplied by the club.
The sessions, held at 150 Lansford Cres, Avondale, cost $10 but this will be credited back to players who join the club following the evening.
