About 550 fire­fight­ers climbed the Sky Tower stairs to raise more than $471,000 for Leukemia & Blood Can­cer New Zealand.

The im­pres­sive fig­ure is a new record for the an­nual Fire­fighter Sky Tower Stair Chal­lenge, which took place on May 10. Fire­fight­ers raced up 51 flights, a to­tal of 1103 stairs, wear­ing full fire­fight­ing kit and breath­ing ap­pa­ra­tus weigh­ing up to 25 kilo­grams.

LBC chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer Pru Etchev­erry says the or­gan­i­sa­tion is ‘‘ex­tremely grate­ful’’ for the sup­port from the fire­fight­ers.

Josh Har­ri­son from Otara sta­tion set a new event record, reach­ing the top of the tower in 8 min­utes and 37 sec­onds.

The fastest woman up the tower was Sandy Hearn, from Melbourne’s Metropoli­tan Fire Bri­gade, with a time of 14min 12sec.

The day be­fore the fire­fight­ers’ climb the Cor­po­rate Sky Tower Stair Chal­lenge raised a to­tal of $114,587.
