Sky Tower race
About 550 firefighters climbed the Sky Tower stairs to raise more than $471,000 for Leukemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.
The impressive figure is a new record for the annual Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge, which took place on May 10. Firefighters raced up 51 flights, a total of 1103 stairs, wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus weighing up to 25 kilograms.
LBC chief executive officer Pru Etcheverry says the organisation is ‘‘extremely grateful’’ for the support from the firefighters.
Josh Harrison from Otara station set a new event record, reaching the top of the tower in 8 minutes and 37 seconds.
The fastest woman up the tower was Sandy Hearn, from Melbourne’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade, with a time of 14min 12sec.
The day before the firefighters’ climb the Corporate Sky Tower Stair Challenge raised a total of $114,587.
