A woman who quit social work to commit to humanitarian aid around the globe will be performing in a special show to support survivors of sexual abuse.

Musician Claire Tonna will be headlining the Voices for Courage concert at K Rd’s Thirsty Dog Tavern at the end of the month.

The concert is set to encourage survivors of sexual abuse while raising funds for charitable organisation HELP.

The Mt Eden-based organisation empowers women and children affected by sexual abuse, and works with the community on education and prevention programmes.

Ms Tonna says she hopes to break down the taboos surrounding issues of sexual abuse, using her music to transform suffering into strength.

Nine years ago she left her career in social work in favour of doing humanitarian aid around the world. She performs in facilities such as psychiatric hospitals and prisons, and has created songs from stories of sexual abuse survivors from all four corners. ‘‘I sing stories,’’ she says. ‘‘When I perform I am detached from myself and the words of others just flow.’’ Joining Ms Tonna for the Voices of Courage show will be a line-up of local artists including the Mike Murane Jazz Trio.

Voices of Courage takes place on Saturday from 8pm at Thirsty Dog Tavern, K Rd.

Entry is $5 on the door with all proceeds donated to HELP.
